The first ever Old Town Kemptville sign was unveiled at a piece of land located on Rideau Street on Thursday, May 26. On hand at the ceremony, was North Grenville's Economic Development Coordinator, Brenda Guy who said, "this is an exciting day for me and this is wonderful for the downtown core."

Eastern Ontario Development Fund Project Coordinator for the Grenville Community Futures Development Corporation (GCFDC) Terri Devine spoke on their behalf stating, "on behalf of the GCFDC congratulations to North Grenville. This sign aids in promoting and increasing awareness of the downtown area."
Councillor Terry Butler started off by thanking the owner of Mac's Convenience Store in Kemptville Norm Racine for allowing the sign to be placed on the land. He thanked Brenda Daley-Beaupit, owner of Classic Graphics who designed and manufactured the sign, Brenda Guy for all her hard work, Pioneer Nursery for beautifying the front of the sign and Industry Canada.
"This is another step toward our goal to bring pride to our downtown core, which is the vision of the Downtown Revitalization Committee. I think you will see over the next five years the beautification of the downtown core and things are coming together," said Councillor Butler.
Mayor Bill Gooch said this is a new sign to represent Kemptville in a 'different way' and added that it is not just Kemptville, but North Grenville because the downtown is the core of the municipality.
Old Town Kemptville runs from the Odd Fellows Hall to St. James Anglican Church on Clothier Street and Prescott to VanBuren Streets. Councillor Butler said that their project this year is to work on the corner of Prescott and VanBuren streets where the plaque for Howard Ferguson is located. They plan to beautify the area by placing an arbour, a bench, flowers, signage for Old Town Kemptville and a six-foot wide path leading up the plaque on the site.
The North Grenville Horticultural Society will be assisting by putting this flowerbed in as well as a flowerbed around the new sign and the North Grenville Historical Society is doing their part by putting together a pamphlet/walking tour of different historical areas in Old Town Kemptville.
Councillor Butler is also trying to set up a meeting with North Grenville District High School (NGDHS) students to improve on the recycling program in the downtown and is hoping they can bring input into what can be done in the downtown.
"Of all the comments, we have received about the downtown, one of the main ones is about the young people. They are really good neighbours who are excited about what's happening in the downtown and who are certainly playing a part in the work being done in the area. The community should be proud of them," said Councillor Butler.
Part of the five year plan, according to Butler is to revitalize the waterfront, have a downtown focus on a 'real haven' for the arts and he envisions the Ferguson Forest Centre trails linking up with a boardwalk which will enable people to walk all through Kemptville along the waterfront.
"This will be an area the community can be very, very proud of. It will compliment the growth on Highway 43 where people can have their fast food and then come downtown to enjoy a calming environment," said Councillor Butler.
